Content & Cultural Sensitivity
Our Commitment
The AlaskaPhoto Archive approaches all subjects — especially Alaska Native communities, cultural sites, and practices — with respect and informed consent. We recognize that images can carry cultural significance and that misrepresentation or inappropriate use can cause harm.
Indigenous Content
Images depicting Alaska Native people, ceremonies, artifacts, or culturally significant sites are created in collaboration with community members where possible. We seek consent before photographing individuals in cultural contexts. We do not stage or sensationalize cultural practices.
Sacred Sites
We are mindful of sacred or sensitive locations. Where we have documented such places, we do so with appropriate context and, where applicable, permission. We may restrict or remove content upon request from community representatives.
Requests for Removal
If you are a community member, cultural representative, or individual depicted in an image and believe that content should be removed or restricted, contact us at [email protected]. We will consider requests seriously and respond in a timely manner. Removal requests based on cultural sensitivity may be honored even where no legal obligation exists.
Context and Captions
We aim to provide accurate, respectful captions that give context without appropriating or misrepresenting cultural knowledge. When we lack sufficient context, we note that in metadata or captions.
Licensing and Use
Licensees using images that depict people or cultural content must use them in a contextually appropriate manner. Misuse — including defamation, misrepresentation, or use that could cause cultural harm — violates our licensing terms and may result in license termination.
Ongoing Review
We periodically review our holdings and practices. As our understanding and community relationships evolve, we may update captions, restrict access, or remove content. We welcome feedback.
