About the Archive
Mission
The AlaskaPhoto Archive exists to create a permanent, accessible photographic record of Alaska — its landscapes, communities, wildlife, and cultural heritage. Every image in this archive is treated as a historical document: carefully preserved, accurately described, and made available for editorial, educational, and institutional use.
Independent Archive
We operate in the spirit of a historical society — permanent record, public access, scholarly use. The archive is mission-driven: an independent project, not corporate or government-funded, committed to Alaska's geographic and cultural visual record.
Scope
Our archive spans over two decades of fieldwork across Alaska, from the temperate rainforests of the Tongass to the arctic tundra of the North Slope. Collections are organized thematically and geographically, covering landscapes, wildlife, fisheries, communities, and atmospheric phenomena.
Archival Standards
All images are archived at full resolution with comprehensive metadata including location, date, technical details, and contextual notes. We follow established archival practices for digital preservation, ensuring long-term accessibility and integrity of the collection.
Cultural Respect
We approach all subjects — especially Alaska Native communities and cultural sites — with respect and informed consent. Images depicting cultural practices, sacred sites, or community events are created in collaboration with community members and include appropriate context.
